Peter Achterstraat AM, FIPAA was appointed the Auditor-General of NSW on 25 September 2006, and ended his term of office on 24 September 2013. Prior to this, he was the Chief Commissioner State Revenue for New South Wales from July 1999.
Before joining the New South Wales Office of State Revenue, he spent 20 years in the Australian Tax Office where he had a variety of roles. Peter was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Taxation with the Australian Taxation Office in 1987.
He holds an honours degree in Economics as well as degrees in Law and Commerce from the ANU. Peter was admitted to the Bar of the NSW Supreme Court in 1983 and a Barrister in the High Court of Australia in 1985. He has University Prizes in Company Finance and in Accounting. In 2006 Peter was admitted into the ANU College of Business and Economics Hall of Fame.
Peter is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney’s Graduate School of Government and is a Principal at the Global Advisory firm Evans & Peck. He was awarded an Order of Australia in 2014 for his Financial Management and Governance roles.
