Michael has held several senior leadership roles in the Department of Planning and Environment since 2014. Prior to his appointment at the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Michael was the Chief Executive of the NSW Land and Housing Corporation, Australia’s largest social housing provider.

The Department of Planning and Environment brings together specialists in urban and regional planning, natural resources, industry, environment, heritage, Aboriginal and social housing, and Crown lands and water.

DPE are delivering a liveable, workable and beautiful NSW through a range of programs and initiatives including more and better homes, creating new jobs by helping businesses thrive, investing in places where people live and play, water and environment, and maximising community benefit from government land and property.

Mick was appointed Secretary of the Department of Planning and Environment in December 2021. In his role as Secretary, Mick is responsible for?ensuring the delivery of the cluster’s priorities and overseeing a diverse portfolio, with over 8,000 employees and around $81 billion of assets.

Mick was appointed Secretary of the Department of Planning and Environment in December 2021. In his role as Secretary, Mick is responsible for?ensuring the delivery of the cluster’s priorities and overseeing a diverse portfolio, with over 8,000 employees and around $81 billion of assets. 

Mick has thirty years’ experience in the construction and real estate industry, and for 15 years served as a permanent firefighter in the NSW Fire Brigade (now Fire and Rescue NSW). He has expertise in managing complex stakeholders and delivering city-changing outcomes, and is passionate about creating opportunities that encourage and support thriving communities.  

Mick formerly led the NSW Government’s social housing agenda as Chief Executive of the Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC), delivering greater access and choice of housing, and addressing social housing shortages across the state. 

Before joining LAHC, Mick spent almost three years as Chief Executive of the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) and five years as the Program Director of the Revitalising Newcastle program. In these positions, Mick helped shape the face of the city, effectively leading significant and sustained urban transformation and economic revitalisation programs, including the Light Rail. 

Mick is a graduate of the renowned Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. He also holds an Executive MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management (UNSW), a Master of Property Development, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Fundamental to her work is her commitment to gender equality and raising the bar (and her voice) on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a speaker, she brings her acerbic wit and intellect to the stage, building great rapport with her audience, as she deftly tackles a breadth of topics from popular culture to critical thinking. Keeva regularly features as a as a judge for various industry awards and has contributed as a thought-leader to leading industry publications, including Branders Magazine, B&T and AdNews, as well as a number of popular podcasts, from The Outer Sanctum to One Question
