SPEAKER

William Murphy
Deputy Secretary, Strategic Projects
NSW Premier's Department

William has held numerous policy and strategy roles across Commonwealth and State Government, with a particular focus on digital transformation, better use of data, and regulatory reform.

From 2019 to 2023, William played a pivotal role in establishing the NSW Department of Customer Service, as the Deputy Secretary responsible for driving customer centricity and data-led decision making and service design. Prior to that, William led the Premier’s Implementation Unit in the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, where his role was to improve outcomes for customers through delivery of the 12 Premier's Priorities, including improving customer satisfaction with government services, reducing domestic violence re-offending, improving service levels in hospitals, reducing litter and delivering better outcomes for children at risk of significant harm.  He is currently Deputy Secretary, Premier’s Department, where his role is to lead the delivery of priority projects for the NSW Government.

In June 2022, William was awarded the Public Service Medal in recognition of his outstanding public service to NSW, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was awarded an Institute of Public Administration National Fellowship in October 2022 for his contribution to the public sector’s use of data and analytics; areas that have been repeatedly identified as essential capabilities for all public sector leaders.

William is a graduate of the Executive Fellows and Executive Master of Public Administration programs from the Australian New Zealand School of Government, University of Sydney. He also holds a Master of Management (Industry Strategy) from the Australian National University, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Finance) from Curtin University in Western Australia.
