Building Ethical Capability

Do you make or influence decisions that affect the public?

Are you responsible for designing or implementing policy?

Do you want greater confidence in identifying and responding to ethical risks?

Robodebt is considered one of the most significant ethical failures in Australian public administration, with major lessons for the NSW public sector. This course gives you the chance to use this powerful case study to strengthen your ethical capability and foster integrity in public sector decision-making and implementation.

Guided by Dr Vafa Ghazavi FRSA GAICD, Senior Lecturer in Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Sydney, you will benefit from his deep expertise in ethics, governance, and public purpose, and gain practical tools to navigate ethical challenges.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Designed for public servants at all levels, this course is ideal for those who seek to better understand ethical challenges, enhance their judgement, promote an ethical culture in their organisation, and renew a sense of public purpose. It will connect ethical capability with achieving better outcomes in government.

Through a mix of role-based hypotheticals and guided group discussion, you will:

  • Examine what went wrong with Robodebt and why it matters to you
  • Explore how to realise ethical ideals when faced with the pressures of real-world practice
  • Understand how different roles can contribute to better ethical outcomes
  • Learn how creativity, collaboration, courage, and wisdom can turn ethical challenges into constructive progress

You will finish this half day course able to:
