Brushing up on Your Grammar and Punctuation

Could you boost your self-confidence by improving your writing ability?

As writers, we know that faulty grammar may make us and our departments appear unintelligent, uninformed and careless. Meanwhile, incorrect punctuation may alter the meaning of our sentences or make them misleading and ambiguous. Although public sector writing does not need to be complicated, it does need to be clear, concise and correct - which makes the use of good grammar and the appropriate punctuation vital to our writing.

Many people whose job involves writing are not entirely sure of the rules. This may be especially true of writers whose first language is not English. This simple, easy-to-understand course is aimed at those in the public sector whose job entails writing and who, though they have a working knowledge of grammar and punctuation, may feel the need to brush up and enhance their proficiency in this area.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Are you someone who must write emails, reports briefing notes and other material as part of your role?
Do you need to improve your skills to work with words, punctuation, grammar and easily identify errors?
Would your work benefit if you could write more succinct and grammatically correct documents, thus reflecting positively on you and your organisation?

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will leave this course able to write more clearly, concisely and correctly.

You will develop a strong understanding of grammar and the 10 key punctuation marks used in English and recognise common words and phrases that create confusion in writing.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the parts of a sentence and understand the function of each part
  • Know what sentences are designed to do, including their propositional content
  • Structure sentences appropriately for clarity and precision
  • Correct grammar and punctuation errors when editing your own and others' writing
  • Write with greater clarity and precision, resulting in less rereading and stronger reader understanding
  • Feel more confident in your use of grammar and punctuation, reducing the need for editing and rewriting by senior management
