Case Study: Building an Organisation-Wide Learning Calendar with IPAA NSW
When the NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) People & Culture Team first reached out to IPAA NSW, they had a goal of establishing a more structured approach to training across the organisation. After discussing their needs and how IPAA NSW could support their capability development goals, we worked together to create a 12-month training calendar for their people across all levels.
The co-designed calendar considered organisational learning needs analysis insights from the RA and current data on emerging trends on themes and learning modes, to balance structure with flexibility. It also allowed the RA to map a frequency plan to release in-house courses at regular intervals throughout the year.
“The process was simple and collaborative, and IPAA NSW made it easy to turn our training requirements into a tangible program that really met the needs of our people.”
This approach provided the RA with flexibility and ownership of how and when courses were released to ensure they were meeting demand and scheduling to fit into the important work of the RA in leading disaster recovery. This resulted in opportunities for growth for employees, with accessible training across different teams and timeframes, while the People & Culture Team could confidently plan and communicate development opportunities well in advance.
“We appreciated how flexible IPAA NSW was, adjusting the schedule as our priorities evolved, and tailoring training content to ensure relevance.”
One Year On
Participation rates have exceeded expectations. The positive feedback from participants highlighted a strong level of engagement with the material and facilitators, and practical learning that can be applied day to day.
“The program has been a real success. It’s streamlined our training process and made it easier for our teams to access approved learning opportunities throughout the year.”
The calendar allowed the team at the RA to centralise their training budget, focus on common skill gaps and ensure access to training was available to all employees.
“IPAA’s learning offerings are specific and relevant to the NSW Public Service and they are a great service provider if you’re looking to compliment your learning and development program”.
Building on the success of this first cycle, the RA is now looking to replicate the model for another 12 months, continuing the partnership with IPAA NSW to sustain momentum and further embed professional learning into the RA’s culture.
