WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
Being part of a Secretary Valedictory event lets you learn directly from a departing member of NSW’s most senior public sector team. It’s a chance to hear their frank assessment about the secrets behind public sector successes and where our sector’s major challenges still lie. You’ll also hear about their own personal career trajectory, how they overcame the challenges they faced and their thoughts about the future of the NSW public sector.
At least 25% of this event is also allocated to questions from the floor, meaning that you will have the opportunity to play an active part in this discussion.
SPEAKER
Jim Betts
Outgoing Secretary
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment
Jim Betts has spent over 30 years working in government agencies in the U.K, Victoria and (for the last eight years) New South Wales. Most recently, Jim led the New South Wales Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) as Secretary for two years. This period saw the department undertake transformational reform in areas like planning reform, water, urban design, sustainability, climate change, biodiversity conservation and energy. Jim was appointed to lead the New South Wales Public Service by Premier Berejiklian in July 2021, but the position was subsequently rescinded by her successor. Prior to joining DPIE, Jim spent six years as Chief Executive Officer for Infrastructure NSW where he led the development of two State Infrastructure Strategies, oversaw the state’s Infrastructure Investor Assurance function, delivered major state infrastructure projects and developed the state plan for the Construction Sector.
