ABOUT THIS EVENT

This deep dive session provides Executive Director-level leaders with an opportunity to explore new leadership strategies during a state of flux.  


Guest speakers Susan Pearce AM, Secretary, NSW Health and Nick Chiam, Partner, PwC will address the topic of transitional leadership, sharing their own personal experiences and the practical tools to help you plan for success now, and in the future.

The discussion will focus on managing transition in government. For those assuming new leadership roles, it will provide a diverse range of perspectives on how to adapt, respond and deliver through a period of flux.

The session will include Q&A as well as peer-level discussion to identify the application the speakers’ ideas, including the nuances required for a public sector context. At least 25% of this event is allocated to questions from the floor, meaning that you will also play an active part in this discussion.

SPEAKERS

 

Susan Pearce AM
Secretary
NSW Health

 

 

Susan Pearce AM is a healthcare leader who has dedicated her career to improving the health outcomes for the people of NSW. Pearce started her career as a registered nurse across rural, remote, and metropolitan areas of NSW.

She has held a number of senior executive positions in NSW Health including Director of Operations at Northern Sydney Local Health District and the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer at the Ministry of Health. She has managed large portfolios, including acute health services, mental health, public health and health promotion, workforce, clinical training and education, and Aboriginal health. 

In 2022, Pearce was appointed as the Secretary of NSW Health. Under Pearce’s leadership, NSW Health underwent significant reform, including the introduction of increased investment in digital health technology, and a focus on improving patient outcomes. She also oversaw the response to major health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and was widely praised for her leadership during these challenging times. 

 

 

 

Nick Chaim
Partner
PwC

 

 

Nick is a Partner in PwC’s Public Sector Consulting practice with a focus on data driven strategy through to execution in service system reform and operating model transformation. Nick joined PwC after twenty years with federal and state social policy departments in Australia including immigration, communities, education, training, human services, disability and health. Nick spent the last ten years as a senior executive leading: service system design in vocational training, disability and public health; and large-scale operating model design and organisational change, including complex machinery of government change, in health and human services.

Nick served in various senior executive roles over five years with the (then) Higher Education & Skills Group including as Director of apprenticeships and traineeships where he worked with TAFEs, employers and unions to oversee the apprenticeship field officer and support officer programs and training package development. He was also Executive Director, tertiary education policy where he led vocational education funding and regulatory reforms for vocational learners, apprentices and trainees.

Nick was Deputy Secretary, Organisational Transformation, Department of Health and Human Services. Nick served as Deputy Secretary, Public Health, Department of Health, including managing policy and operations for health promotion, prevention and protection services and regulation. During the COVID pandemic response, Nick oversaw public health compliance operations and management of other public health threats.
