ABOUT THIS EVENT

This deep dive session provides Deputy Secretary level leaders with an opportunity to explore new leadership strategies to embed transformation. 

Guest speakers Scott Wharton, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Smartgroup Corporation, and Anthony Mitchell, Chairman and Chief Potential Officer, Bendelta, will tackle the subject of leadership during times of transition, drawing from their unique personal journeys and providing invaluable practical resources to assist you in crafting a roadmap for immediate and future transformation.

The discussion will centre around effective leadership in transitional phases. With a particular emphasis on supporting individuals to thrive through transformation, the session will offer insights into the art of adjustment, proactive responsiveness, and successful execution during times of instability.

This event presents a chance to listen to the insights of leaders from both the public and private sector regarding the obstacles and essential factors for success during times of transition.

The session will include Q&A as well as peer-level discussion to identify the application the speakers’ ideas, including the nuances required for a public sector context. At least 25% of this event is allocated to questions from the floor, meaning that you will also play an active part in this discussion.

This event offers a unique chance to expand your professional connections and actively participate in the type of cross-sector collaboration that has proven indispensable in addressing the difficulties faced by our state in recent times.

SPEAKERS

 

Scott Wharton
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer
Smartgroup Corporation 

 

 

Mr Wharton’s career spans over 20 years in financial services across Australia, Asia, and the United States. He has a strong track record in leading and transforming organisations through performance improvement, digital strategy, technology, and cultural change. 

Over the past year Mr Wharton has been CEO of The Star Sydney, focussed on stabilising the business. Prior to this role he was a Group Executive and member of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s Executive Leadership team. In this role he led efforts critical to making CBA a Simpler, Better Bank. This included the successful delivery of the Remedial Action Plan, in response to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s Inquiry into governance, culture, and accountability in 2018, delivering the CBA’s multi-year productivity effort, and the establishment of the CBA talent centre in India. 

Mr Wharton has also held senior management positions with Citigroup in Hong Kong and New York, where he was a Managing Director and a member of the Operations & Technology Global Operating Committee. Mr Wharton is a Fellow and Adjunct Professor (Industry) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he is also a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Industry Advisory Board. In May 2022, he was appointed as the Co-Chairman of Supply Nation (the Australian supplier diversity council) and is also an Ambassador of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. 

Mr Wharton holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney, a Bachelor of Laws from UTS, an Executive MBA from INSEAD and an Executive MBA from Tsinghua University (Beijing).

 

 

Anthony Mitchell
Chairman and Chief Potential Officer
Bendelta

 

 

Anthony Mitchell is the co-founder and Chief Potential Officer of strategic advisory firm Bendelta. Over 25 years in consulting, Anthony has worked in more than 30 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, and the Middle East. Under his leadership, Bendelta has received six Best Employer awards in the last two years, named in the AFR/BOSS Most Innovative Firms for the last three years running and has twice won the world’s highest award for leadership development. 

The art and science of strategic leadership is what has driven Anthony to where he is today. As Dux of both his degrees (one in Mathematics and one in Psychology), and with postgraduate business qualifications from Cornell University, Anthony has a unique mix of expertise across typically separate ways of thinking. 

Outside of Bendelta, Anthony pursues his passion for human potential in other ways. From 2016-2023, he has been the Chairman of the Aurora Education Foundation which has helped change the narrative for Indigenous tertiary education through unprecedented scholarships to Oxford, Cambridge, and Harvard. He was also the Chairman and President of Amnesty International Australia
