ABOUT THIS EVENT

Beyond real-world limitations, the metaverse unlocks new possibilities for improved responses in critical and challenging situations.

Join Michael Willing, as he explores the transformative potential of this virtual frontier and considers how it may best be leveraged for essential frontline workers.

This event is your chance to witness firsthand how new realities can be applied to immersive training and virtual command centers to better support and equip frontline workers. Hear Michael's views on the opportunities and challenges of adopting emerging technologies in government.

WHAT WILL YOU GAIN?

Discover how this new technology can support frontline workers with immersive training, improved information, and connectivity to support critical decision-making that can help save lives, support the mental wellbeing of workers in extreme situations and improve recruitment, retention, and development of our essential workforce.

The session will include Q&A as well as peer-level discussions, with opportunities for all attendees to ask questions and consider how this technology may be best applied in an open and frank session held under the Chatham House Rule.

Speaker

Michael Willing
Managing Director and Client Account Lead
Accenture Australia’s National Security and Safety Account

Michael ‘Mick” Willing is currently an Accenture Managing Director and Client Account Lead for Accenture Australia’s National Security and Safety Account. Prior to joining Accenture Mick was a former Deputy Police Commissioner in the NSW Police Force, where he served for over 31 years. During this time he led area commands, and was the state’s longest servicing homicide squad commander.

As an Assistant Commissioner, Michael led the Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command, as well as the Central Metropolitan Region, before assuming the role of Deputy Commissioner Regional NSW Field Operations leading a workforce of over 5800 personnel. He also led the NSW recovery efforts from the 2019/2022 bushfire disaster as State Recovery Coordinator – overseeing a joint whole of government and Australian Defence Force taskforce as the head of the then NSW Disaster Recovery Office.

Michael is a member of the University of Sydney Institute of Criminology Advisory Committee, a Leadership in Counter Terrorism (LinCT) Alumni member, and has received numerous awards including commendations for bravery, the NSW Police Medal, National Medal, the Australian Police Medal.

Michael was born and bred in Dubbo NSW, and is married to Kirsten, a psychologist. They have two daughters in high school. Throughout his policing career, Michael experienced first-hand the personal and professional challenges that first responders face and carry every day — not only as a leader but as a friend and confidant.

Michael is passionately devoted to paying it forward by helping first responders transition to meaningful lives and careers beyond public service — having experienced a unique transition journey from senior law enforcement executive to the private sector himself. He firmly believes that being a first responder can be a distinct advantage, given the unique value that first responders possess, and the broad range of skills and experiences they develop throughout their careers.
