Ethical Decision Making in the NSW Public Sector

Do you need to make critical decisions in your work while maintaining integrity and impartiality?

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Are you a decision maker committed to integrity and impartiality?

Would your work benefit from a greater understanding of how to make ethical and accountable decisions?

Maintaining integrity and public trust is a key responsibility for the public sector and its organisations. Ethical decisions are those that can be demonstrated to be in line with the ethical principles of the public sector.

If you are committed to integrity and impartiality, promoting the public good, accountability and transparency, and want the tools to make ethical and accountable decisions, this course is for you.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will leave this course with a strong understanding of how to make ethical and accountable decisions and the standards which are expected of you in your public sector work.

You will use models for making ethical decisions, work through a series of real-life public sector examples and case studies, and apply frameworks to situations and ethical issues you are likely to encounter in your job.

In this half day workshop you will take part in group discussions and breakout group activities to identify ethical issues and view ethical dilemmas from multiple viewpoints before making your decisions.

You will have the opportunity to explore your own experiences and those of your fellow learners, identify strengths and areas for improvement and share knowledge, skills, ideas and concerns.

You will finish this course knowing you can:

  • understand what accountable and ethical decision making is.
  • recognise accountable and ethical decision making in the context of the public sector and your agency.
  • apply the public sector accountability, integrity and ethics framework and OECD Principles for Managing Ethics in the Public Sector into your decision making.
  • understand relevant legislation, public sector principles and compliance instruments that underpin the work of public sector employees like you.
  • recognise how public sector values apply to your workplace decisions.
  • identify ethical issues in the workplace and assess the ethics of decisions you make in the work environment.
  • apply a step-by-step framework for your ethical decision making: Cooper’s Ethical Decision-Making Model.
