- work through the seven principles that infuse all writing with clarity and concision.
- identify what’s the point? – determining the precise purpose of any piece of writing.
- identify who cares? – identifying readers.
- learn how to write to different target readerships.
- decide the most effective order of the writing to achieve purpose.
- know the difference between writing to inform and writing to influence or persuade.
- write for readers outside the agency: turning jargon into common parlance.
- examine twenty-two common areas of poor writing: from grammar and vocabulary to tone, style and proof-reading.
- learn how to précis: turning long documents into short ones.
- make the writing muscular: finding and eradicating the hidden 20% of fat in most writing: the soft, abstract noun phrases; soggy adjectives adverbs; overuse of the passive.
Effective Writing Skills is for people at the Foundational to Advanced levels and you will develop the following capabilities:
